HOME MAINTENANCE

Asheville's Expert Handyman | Spring 2026 | 5 min read

Spring in Western North Carolina is one of the most beautiful times of year — but for your home, it comes after months of cold temperatures, heavy rain, ice, and humidity that quietly take their toll. The good news? A little attention now prevents big, expensive repairs later. Here are the 10 most important things to check this spring.

01 Inspect your deck for winter damage

WNC winters are hard on wood. Freeze-thaw cycles work moisture into boards and joints, causing boards to warp, pop nails, and accelerate rot. Walk your deck and press a screwdriver into any discolored or soft-looking wood — if it sinks in easily, rot has set in. Check the ledger board where the deck meets the house; this is the most structurally critical connection and the most overlooked.

A quick professional inspection can catch rot early — before it becomes a full deck replacement.

02 Check all exterior caulking and seals

Caulking around windows, doors, and where siding meets trim is your home's first line of defense against water intrusion. Asheville's humidity and temperature swings cause caulk to crack and pull away faster than in drier climates. Look for gaps, cracks, or areas where the caulk has turned brown or brittle. Failed caulking lets in water and insects — and can quietly cause mold and wood rot behind your walls.

Re-caulking is one of the most cost-effective handyman jobs you can do — and it makes a visible difference.

03 Clean and inspect your gutters

Asheville's abundant trees mean gutters fill up fast. After winter, debris, shingle grit, and standing water from the last storm are likely sitting in your gutters right now. Blocked gutters overflow, directing water toward your foundation, siding, and fascia boards — causing damage that costs far more to fix than a simple gutter clean. Also check that gutters are still firmly attached; heavy ice and wind can pull them loose.

Don't get on the ladder yourself — this is a quick, affordable job for a handyman.

04 Look for wood rot around doors and windows

Door and window frames in older Asheville homes are especially vulnerable. Water wicks into wood trim over winter, and by spring the rot is often visible — soft, discolored, or spongy areas around the frame. Catching this early means a simple repair. Left alone, rot spreads into structural framing and the repair cost multiplies fast. Pay special attention to the bottoms of door frames and any window sills that face north or collect water.

Early wood rot repair is a straightforward handyman job — don't wait until it spreads.

05 Test all exterior doors and windows for drafts

Close a dollar bill in each exterior door and window. If you can pull it out without resistance, you're losing conditioned air — and paying for it on every energy bill. Worn weatherstripping is cheap to replace but often ignored until the energy bill climbs. With Asheville summers getting hotter, a well-sealed home matters more than ever. While you're at it, make sure all exterior doors latch and close squarely — winter settling can throw them out of alignment.

Weatherstripping replacement and door adjustments are quick fixes with immediate payoff.

06 Pressure wash driveways, walkways, and siding

Asheville's shaded, moist environment is a breeding ground for mold, mildew, and algae on exterior surfaces. What looks like dirt on your siding, driveway, or walkway is often a living layer of organic growth that's gradually degrading the surface beneath it. Annual pressure washing removes it before it causes permanent staining or deterioration — and it immediately improves the look of your home's exterior.

A professional pressure wash takes a couple of hours and transforms the curb appeal of your home.

07 Check interior ceilings and walls for water stains

A brown ring or discoloration on your ceiling is never "just cosmetic." It means water got in from somewhere — a roof leak, plumbing issue, or overflowing gutter — and may have been sitting in your insulation or framing. Spring is the time to do a slow walk through every room, looking up. Catching a ceiling stain before the next rain lets you identify and fix the source before it becomes a major water damage event.

Drywall repair and ceiling patching after a leak is a common handyman job — but fix the source first.

08 Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Spring and fall are the ideal times to test every smoke and CO detector in your home and replace batteries. If any detector is more than 10 years old, replace it entirely — the sensors degrade over time and may not trigger in an emergency. Make sure you have CO detectors on every floor, especially near sleeping areas. This is a 15-minute task that could save your life.

A handyman can replace and test all detectors in your home in one visit while knocking out other items on this list.

09 Walk your foundation and grading

Walk the perimeter of your home and look for cracks in the foundation, especially horizontal ones (which indicate pressure). Also check that the ground slopes away from your house — if soil has settled and now slopes toward the foundation, water is being directed straight into your crawl space or basement with every rain. This is especially important in Asheville's hillside and sloped-lot homes. Catch grading issues early and the fix is simple mulch or topsoil work. Ignore it, and the result is water in your basement.

Not sure what you're looking at? A handyman inspection visit can flag foundation and drainage concerns before they grow.

You don't have to tackle all of this at once — but you should at least know what's going on with your home heading into spring. Even a quick walk-through using this list will tell you where to focus first.

If you'd rather have a pro take a look and handle what needs fixing, that's exactly what we're here for. We serve Asheville and the surrounding Western North Carolina area and can knock out multiple items from this list in a single visit.
